Introducing e text editor - TextMate for Windows?
There’s now another alternative for Windows users who lust after TextMate (oh dear). Rather than splashing out for a Mac, unlike myself, you could try the e text editor for Windows. It’s currently available for download in beta form with a 30 day trial period.
I haven’t had a chance to try it out for long so far but here are two huge benefits:
- Vibrant Ink theme is stunningly recreated and a joy for Rails coding (I’ve yet to see a nicer white-on-black editor for Windows)
- e text editor features an extremely clever undo which could take it a step beyond TextMate. I’ve previously used Eclipse and know how useful it is to be able to review a history of local file changes within an editing period, e extends this with visual branching.

The author of e is also actively seeking to cooperate with Allan Odgaard, of TextMate, to make them compatible (such as the bundles). One final point is the possibility of the e editor being ported to Linux… all great news.
