Permanently disable Mac startup sound
One minor annoyance with my MacBook Pro – hearing the startup sound every time it gets turned on. Not too bad when I’m at home but it’s a major embarrassment out in public. The answer is to install StartupSound.prefPane 1.1b1 which allows you to set the startup volume or to disable is completely.
StartupSound.prefPane is the software which controls the volume of the startup sound of your Macintosh computer. StartupSound.prefPane mute the startup sound without changing the output volume setting. And StartupSound.prefPane limits the startup volume so that it may not become loud even if you make the output volume louder. To set up the startup volume, you select the “Startup Sound” pane added to the “System Preferences.”

exactly what i was lookin for. thx.
I can’t access the setup on the latest mac os x update 10.4.9
Oh my lord, THANK YOU. I have been looking all over for a solution to this, I even was about to install rEFIt so I could dig around in the firmware and see if I could find an option to disable that nuisance of a noise. Major embarrassment indeed!! How have people been using Macbooks like mine for this long without getting pissed off and demanding a fix from Apple??? Thanks again!
How perfectly marvelous! @ NewToMacs: did you email Apple to tell them that you’d prefered your Mac without the startup sound? Maybe everyone got pissed off but Apple didn’t fix that because they didn’t get any feed back! Thanks anyway for this helpful little program
Is there any possibility to do this without having MacOS installed? I’m running only Linux on my MacBook Pro and haven’t yet found a way to turn it off.
Mactastic, thanks for this great program, much appreciated!!
Doesnt work on Leopard on my Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro =(
This StartupSound preferences panel only works on a successful shutdown. When the system crashes for any reason, or when you press and hold the computer’s off button to turn the computer off, the panel fails to turn the volume down.
A more sound (no pun intended) solution would involve either actually removing the sound resource itself, or removing some setting that links the startup sound with that resource.
For those of you who say it doesn’t work in Panther or Leopard – it does. At first i didn’t find it when i opened up “Sound” preferences.
You won’t find it in the “Sound” preferences panel. When you select “Show All” preferences, you will see it at the bottom under “Other.” Click “startup sound” and then press “mute”
Yeah I know. But it still doesnt work on Leopard – Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.
it does work. you have to check the “turn on startup sound” box and check “mute”.
This program reliable? Anyone checked for other things it will be able to do in the background without notice?
