My first Facebook app (using Rails)

Posted by Ben Sun, 01 Jul 2007 15:03:00 GMT

Is Facebook the future of the internet? A tricky question to answer but I thought I’d jump straight in and create my first Facebook application using Ruby on Rails.

As seen in one of my previous blog posts I’m a fan of lolcat pictures which gave me the perfect idea for a basic Facebook app. Display the latest lolcat pics from icanhascheezburger.com (the premier lolcat wesbite) and allow users to chose one to show on their Facebook profile.

I used the rfacebook Ruby gem to handle the heavy lifting required to ensure Facebook users are logged in and have added your application correctly. This meant that creating the actual application was quick and easy (just 265 LOC reported by rake stats). A detailed guide to creating a Rails-based Facebook app will be the subject of another blog post.

If, like me, you loved the BBC’s ‘mockumentary’ The Office then you’ll want to watch the following two special episodes featuring Ricky Gervais as David Brent specially commissioned for Microsoft UK. Both are available to watch via Google Video.

Demotivators

Found these a while ago but thought I’d share the joy… Demotivators are the opposite of those inspirational posters that you’ve probably seen. I absolutely love these “demotivational” posters, they really hit my sense of humour.

Update: Just found some Extreme Programming Motivational Posters
